Proud Mommy Moments: Cheryl from Mommypants is Here!

Thursdays are becoming my favorite day of the week because my friends stop by and they share their Proud Mommy Moments with us.

Today is no exception, I am so honored to have Cheryl from the amazing blog Mommypants here today.

I mean she’s amazing.
She is one of the co-founders of The Red Dress Club and is one of the best writers I’ve ever read.
Her stories always give me something to think about, write about, learn about and pass on to others.
Plus with a blog named Mommypants you know she has some AMAZING stories about her kiddos.
A couple of my favorites:
She is Me
Queen Bee
Look Who’s Talking

She also writes PHENOMENAL fiction, like stories that you wish you came up with, words that seems to just flow from her pen/keyboard.

If you’ve never been introduced to Brock  or Skye  you should go over and spend the rest of the day with them.
It’s THAT good.

So here she is with a Proud Mommy Moment that warmed me from the inside out, this shows just what a phenomenal mom she is and how her children are so lucky to have her.

************************************************************
I was so honored when Kir asked me to guest post here about a proud mommy momment. Kir is one of the sweetest and most supportive bloggers there is – and she writes so fun fiction! So thanks, Kir, for having me over!!

I found a great deal for three days at summer camp and I scooped it up.

This camp is affiliated with a water park and then the rest of the day the kids do all kinds of camp-y things: canoeing, games, climbing a rock wall, song, etc. It sounded so fun – something I would totally have loved to do when I was a kid. Or even now.

I dropped the kids off at 9 a.m. the first day and off they went into the bounce house. I came back to pick them up at 4 p.m. – I KNOW!! – and they spent the entire ride home competing with each other in the “talking to Mom” Olympics.

So imagine my surprise when Sawyer, my 7 1/2 year-old, told me after dinner he didn’t want to go back.
What what?

Apparently, when they were canoeing, he was having a tough time steering and he said he was told to come off the boat. And then everyone called him a “loser.”

Now, I’m not sure this really happened. It sounds a bit extreme. But the next morning – after I had to convince him to go again (okay, maybe I actually simply told him I paid for it, it cost a lot of money, and he had no choice), I spoke to his counselor and he assured me he’d keep a closer eye on Sawyer.

“You know, he’s such an outgoing, confident kid, I kind of just let him be,” the counselor said.

“He is very social,” I told him, “But he’s also very sensitive.”

I picked them up a little earlier that day, and the counselor assured me both Sawyer and Sage had a great day.

And yet.

Sawyer said it wasn’t fun, he didn’t want to go back, he was practically in tears. And of course, he had no choice – back he went for Day 3. He was not sad to hear it was the last time he had to go.

Until I picked him up.

The counselor pulled me aside to let me know he’d given Sawyer the much-coveted Camper of the Week award.

“I know he didn’t like a lot of the activities, but instead of whining or complaining, he tried everything. I thought that was awesome.”
You know what? I thought so too. My cautious first-born kept a positive attitude. He wasn’t a distraction. He wasn’t obnoxious or mopey.

He tried. He tried, and I was very, very proud.

Sawyer and Sage saw me and came running. And as we walked down the dirt path to the parking lot, Sawyer turned to me.

“Mommy? I”m going to miss camp.”

**********************************************************
yep, here’s the Kleenex, I know I have one too.
What a fantastic mommy moment. *Sigh*

Great story!  It is true that sometimes kids don't like things as it pushes them out of their comfort zone, but then once they've done that a few times, they feel so proud of themselves.  For our daughter it was swimming lessons when she was 6 years old.  She's a really good swimmer now!

Cheryl is indeed a great writer, and such a supportive bloggy friend. Great story Cheryl –  such a special proud mommy moment! He's headed for great things, your Sawyer.

Morning Kir, love this meme that you have going – so inspiring to read the stories about the good things instead of just all of the things we believe we fail in!

I am also a fan of both Kir and Cheryl, despite my lack of desire for offspring. Anyway, this is a great moment and it reminded me of when I was little. I was also hesitant (and by hesitant, I mean stubborn as heck) to try something I assumed I wouldn't like. Most of the time I fell in love with whatever it was and became mildly obsessed with it from that point on (cue them dragging me off the stage after my first dance recital.)Great perspective that I don't often take in, so thanks for this post!

Yay! for seeing Cheryl over here.  I think that's a really important Mommy moment.  I admire you for making him go back, especially the third day.  Sometimes they need to be pushed to really break through their hesitation, but it can be hard to do.  What a great example of putting their needs before that of immediate gratification.

I know – I think we tend to write more about our failures, but it is always fun to write about our kids' successes! No matter how small..

Hee! They had to drag you off the stage? I love this!!
