TRDC: Nico: Off the Coast of Amalfi

I don’t brag often, but a post of mine was picked to be SPOTLIGHTED at BlogHer  today and I’d love if you’d go over and read it and celebrate with me. I’m so honored  and tickled pink to have this piece Being Carried selected for the Family page.

********************************************************
If you haven’t been properly introduced to Kimmy & David , this piece can stand alone.
But if you find that you’d love to know their Whole Story you can find it right here.

************************************************************
Nico stood with his feet close to the edge of the cliff. His muscular body, rippling and tanned to a deep golden brown.

Sweat beading up on his back inside the black wet suit, he only wish  was to jump.

He took in the glorious sunrise of Positano. Even this early in the morning, this “land of a thousand steps” was more beautiful than any place he had ever been in his life.

You could almost hear the heart of the town, pulsing, waking up and inviting its people to embrace life.

Dolce Vita.

Arms pinned at his side, he pushed off in a rush of air, a perfect pencil dive. Nico plummeted nine feet, past jagged rocks and hidden stone crevices, hoping the babychain had not lied. His question answered as his toes hit the glorious blue water, the wet suit protecting him from the sharp stabs of the waves.

Pure ecstasy, mixed with his exhilaration and fear as he surfaced.

The dive was merely a memory now, a task completed.

Nico swam leisurely to shore, wondering if Dani if had come back to the villa. She had left before dawn today, her exit a message of independence and indifference. He did not care; of course, their arrangement was one of lust not love, excitement not expectation.

His reached the rocky beach of the Amalfi Coast, unzipped the restrictive rubber suit and let the hot July air dry his torso before he could reach for a towel. The oceanfront was quiet as he raised his face to the sun, catching site of the dome of Santa Maria Assunta shimmering above him.

Dani had talked of the church often when they’d met, her descriptions making even a house of God seem sensual.

Vieni a casa con me” she had whispered in his ear as he came inside her. She continued to plead over dinners and walks in Central Park, “Come home with me Nico” she’d purred, “Come. And I’ll show you the true Italy”

It had not taken much to persuade him, even as he teased her with work commitments and responsibilities to his Wall Street desk. Soon, he was informing his firm of a leave of absence and his days were filled with the sweet touch of Daniela, her legs spread and his mind opened. Her body always ready to welcome him, her accented voice urging him “Baciami”  kiss me.

But these days, he could sense a shift in both of them.

Last night on the piazza, under the twinkling eyes of the stars, they had sipped Limocello caressing one another as they had a thousand times before, both eager to escape to the canopied bed at the Palazzo Murat. Yet, once they had explored and satisfied one another, their panting slowed to an uneasy silence.

They had never been meant to last, like an una donna finita, he supposed, they were no longer in fashion.

Nico could already feel the bear and bull pulling him back to Manhattan even as he climbed the steps from the beach to the center of town. He started to walk toward the hotel when his phone chimed with an instrumental version of Volare that Dani had insisted he download.

Ciao

“Ah Nico, enjoying your sabbatical?”

“Marco! Fratello!!”

Marco’s chuckle traveled across the Atlantic, Nico was instantly homesick.

Cavolo! How the hell are you Marco?”

“I’m good, but Mom misses you. I think it’s the stock tips. “

Vaffaculo!” Nico shot back

“Ah I see Dani is teaching you all the important phrases, well you can go fuck yourself too “

They both laughed heartily, a comfortable side effect of their relationship as twins.

Nico broke in, “So, how is our Kimmy”?”

“Um, well that’s why I’m calling bro. Seems she‘s been talking to David.”

“Oh that ragazza sciocca, silly girl. You alright? “

Marco hesitated, “I’m fine. I love her, I’ll be damned if I lose her to him, but right now I think she just needs some space.”

Nico didn’t hesitate, “When should I expect you?”

“I’m at the airport in Naples. Can you come and pick me up? “

Sorry I’m late today everyone (especially you Tiina :) but it’s been a busy week.

So the prompt for this week was given to us by two of my favorite writers here in  blogland

here is what they asked of us over at The Red Dress Club:
The most frequent advice I come across for amateur writers is, “Write what you know.”
“What you know” doesn’t necessarily always mean “your comfort zone.” For this week, take what you know out of your comfort zone. Try a new genre, a new time period, a geography you’ve only dreamed of, fantasy or historical instead of contemporary fiction, try the male POV if you usually write women. Or vice versa.
Switch it up. See where it takes you.
Ok, so before today and this post, I knew nothing about Cliff Diving, the city of Positano, how to get my freak on or say Fuck Off in Italian. I think this one qualifies for “taking me out of my comfort zone ” for sure. But Gosh, It was FUN!
Hope you enjoyed it too

and don’t forget our Summer of Sole Sisters Blog Hop, you can show off that pedicure and share your favorite shoes with us until August 19th.
I am currently taking pictures of my shoes in exotic locales. :)
