Proud Mommy Moments: Shari the Earth Mother is Bringing the Funny

Photobucket

Another Thursday, another Proud Mommy and today have I got a treat for you, because Shari of Earth Mother Just Means I’m Dusty is the real deal when it comes to humor bloggers.

I can’t remember who introduced me to Shari’s blog, it was either the Empress or Suniverse, both very very funny ladies in their own rights. After the first time I visited her blog, I was hooked. She was introspective, she was hilarious, she was the kind of girl I wanted to party with. (ahem)

So I started visiting (stalking) her and getting my daily dose of chuckling, plus when she’d write about her mom, the infamous and mildly fantastic MAMA ROSE, I knew we were in for a great story and a gut full of giggles. (Maybe it was because Mama Rose reminds me soooo much of my own mom, bless her heart)

It was safe to safe, I really liked Shari.

I’d make sure to get up early if she was going to be on the TODAY show and I found a friend in the fiery red headed goddess who lived “this close to NYC“. Then Serendipity allowed for me to meet her this past Sunday, she was an usher at LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER and when I recognized her I hugged her like a long lost friend, cause she was.

She’s just as awesome in person.

Today she is here sharing a funny, touching and “oh no she didn’t tell that joke again” moment with her son and daughter.

It will make you laugh, but I also wouldn’t be surprised if you teared up too. (of course I DID!)

****************************************

My kids learned how to tell a joke.

“What?” you say. “That’s your proud Mommy Moment?”

Dudes, I’m a humor writer, so you bet your Aunt Tina Fey that was a proud moment. Went a little something like this:

Me: Okay, guys, so now that we got your hair trimmed, I’m going to tell you a joke that you can use at school tomorrow. When someone says ‘ did you got a haircut?’, you say, ‘I got all of them cut.’

6-year old Son: I don’t get it.

7-year old Daughter: Ohhhh… A haircut… A HAIRcut… like, one of them cut, right?! Except I got all of them cut, right?!

Me: Right! You’re going to be raking in the comedy-writing dough before you know it, kid.

6-year old Son: I still don’t get it.

Me: You don’t have to get it. I don’t get half of the stuff I say on a daily basis. Just say it and let them laugh.

6-year old Son: Okay. Let’s practice.

Me: ‘Did you get a haircut?”

6-year old Son: ‘I got allovum cut!’

Me: (laughs heartily)

Son: This is fun.

 Daughter: You’re funny, Mommy.

Now I will give you my Proud Mommy Moment disclaimer: the haircut joke is not at all funny. I know, I was shocked, too. But the practicing of the joke, the telling of the joke, the satisfaction of the joke… the satisfaction of having a moment with my kids where they enjoyed me, each other, the process… these are the moments to treasure up in one’s heart. “A cheerful heart is good medicine” says Proverbs 17:22 and I love that my kids are learning to dispense this elixir and enjoying that tremendous gift of God, laughter.

See, I told you, laughter and tears right?

I told you she was amazing, you really need to listen to me next time.

Now, here are all the places you can find (stalk) her too:

Facebook, Twitter, Her FABULOUS BLOG, she also writes for Aiming Low

Go! NOW! you won’t be sorry.

THANK YOU for sharing my corner today Shari, I adore you girl!

It’s so true. Laughter can cure anything but herpes…of which I don’t have…

I love this proud mommy moment!! :) My kids tend to start off with trying to make knock knock jokes, and when they finally get it right, its such a triumph!!! The very first attempt at one by my first child still gets me giggling when I think of it. Thanks for coming to visit Kir, and thanks for having her over, Kir!!

Could not have said it better myself, Dusty. And I mean it: I could not have.

Knocked it out of the ball park with this one, Shari.

    Love you so.

It’s always more funny trying to explain a joke to the kids than actually telling it to them!!! :)
